The Lead Body for Reflexology in the UK

What is Reflexology?

For the purposes of the Reflexology Forum, the term "REFLEXOLOGY" shall be taken to mean that Reflexology is an art and science that deals with the principle that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands which correspond to all of the glands, organs and parts of the body.

Reflexology is a unique method of using the thumb and fingers on these reflex areas in order to support nature in maintaining homeostasis, as far as may be achieved for each individual. It does this by stimulating the reflex areas which may help to relieve stress and tension, improve the blood supply to all areas of the body and promote the correct functioning of nerve impulses.

Note that in Reflexology the word 'stimulate' refers to an action that may produce a response, this response could be sedation, stimulation or no response at all.

Reflexology aims to treat the imbalances of each individual and to alleviate and improve symptoms. It does not however diagnose a specific medical problem.

In July 1999 Reflexology Organisations across the UK came together under the independent chairmanship of Simon Mills from Exeter University's Department for Complementary Health Studies. This paved the way for a regular series of meetings and the Reflexology Forum, the recognised developing regulatory body for reflexology, was formally constituted on 20th September 2002.
It is with deep regret that we announce the very sad news that after a long illness bravely fought and borne, Clive O'Hara lost his fight for life on Friday 6 th June 2008.

An incredibly dedicated man, Clive was a former Chair of Trustees at Bury Cancer Support Centre, an Executive Director of Bury Cancer Support Centre, The Senior lecturer in Reflexology at The Christie Hospital, Manchester and a former head of CPD training in Reflexology and Cancer Care at Bristol Cancer Health Centre (Penny Brohn Centre).

He was also the Chair of The Centre for Advanced Reflexology, a member of Regulation Committee and Chair of the Education Committee, of the Reflexology Forum, and Editor of the Core Curriculum for Reflexology in the United Kingdom; he was a much loved and respected contributor to the advancement of Reflexology.

A clear thinker and gifted moderator, Clive leaves a legacy of accumulated knowledge in the field of the regulation and education of reflexology and the use of the therapy in palliative care.

He is greatly missed.

Reflexology will not support proposed regulator

Following a meeting in August 2007, Member organisations of the Reflexology Forum voted to formally reject the regulatory process proposed by the Federal Working Group (now known as the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council) set up by the Princes Foundation for Integrated Health. This decision was taken on the grounds that the process was unsuitable for the regulation of complementary medicine in the United Kingdom. The Reflexology Forum has written to the Prince's Foundation for integrated Health detailing the reasons for the profession's decision.
